The availability heuristic occurs when people overestimate the occurrence of more memorable instances or events because these are readily available to memory when trying to decide or to answer a question.

  • Give an example of how you have recently used the availability heuristic.
  • Research other heuristics (there are hundreds of them) online. Discuss another heuristic and share an example of how you have used it.

Why do so many mistrust scientific findings? Often because the finding conflicts with a person's worldview. Misinformation occurs when people remember something they read without engaging in careful analysis or evaluation and thus incorporate that information into their general knowledge.
