Assignment - Advances in IT and Management Essay
Question 1 - Project Planning or Fail Forward Approach - According to authors Austin, Nolan, and O'Donnell (2016), Jim Barton's analyst believes the company has failed in past projects due to having insufficient planning and lack of structure. On the other hand, Jim Barton's Loan Operations employee disagrees, stating that spending time on planning a project will not solve the issue. She believes its best if the company "fails forward" (Austin et al., 2016, p. 93). The sooner a project is started, potential problems can be evaluated, and changes can be implemented. Which strategy of project management do you agree with: project planning or the fail forward approach and why?
Question 2 - IT Leader - In this week's IT Leader readings, we get another interaction between the kid and Jim Barton (2009). The kid told Jim that it is important to not engage in a "death march" (2009). Do you think that Jim did in fact engage in a death march when settling the disagreement between workers? What do you think would be helpful in preventing engagement in a death march?
Question 3 - INFORMATION SYSTEMS PROJECT MANAGEMENT - Approximately only 29 percent of information systems (IS) projects are completed on time, in budget, and includes the features and functions requested by the client (Rainer &Cegielski, 2011). Why do IT projects have such a low success rate? What does an organization need to do to have a higher project success rate?
Question 4 - DESCRIPTIVE ANALYTICS - In Rainer chapter twelve we learn about descriptive analytics (Rainer & Prince, 2016, p 348). In what way could using descriptive analytics benefit you in your current job?
Question 5 - Project Management - In The Adventures of an IT Leader, Jim Barton runs into "the kid" again at Vinnie's Bistro. During this encounter, the kid talks about 'death march' projects. Have you ever experienced a death march project within your place of employment?
