Case Study: The organization we intend to study is Local Point, a student cafeteria run by UW Housing & Food Services. Our team would like to figure out how to utilize modern technology and rational decision-making principles and design communication systems to effectively allocate resources, like human capital and time, to maximize productivity and improve employee overall job satisfaction.
WHY (example answer):
Our team chose Local Point because it's closely related to student life. Also, many of our friends work there which makes the data collection easily accessible, thus making the organization appropriate for this study. We chose the problem considering how often we hear our friends' complaints about unreasonable shift arrangements that cause inconvenience to their academic lives and unpleasant working experiences. For example, arranged shifts often conflict with their upcoming academic plans and are challenging to be quickly adjusted; there are very few employees to serve crowded customers, generating employee anxiety and exhaustion; it's also possible that there are plenty of employees but very few customers, also generating employee's negativities, such as boredom, waste of time, and sluggishness. Yet as far as we know, it has also been a great pain for managers and supervisors who create time schedules. Student employees work part-time and their availability is extremely unstable. High turnover and availability changes are extremely common, which makes arranging shifts difficult and challenging. This problem is vital because it greatly affects student employees, managers, the organization's operating efficiency, and service quality. Therefore, we hope to apply modern technology and design innovative communication systems within staff teams to address this problem and hopefully make a positive net impact on these organizations' stakeholders.
