Question: In Pericles' Funeral Oration in Thucydides History of the Peloponnesian War, Pericles paints a very distinct and noble picture of Athens as a paragon of Greek virtue - the "school of Hellas," he called them - yet those values seem completely absent in Athens' actual conduct of the war, especially in events like the debate over the fate of the rebellious city-state of Mytilene or the destruction of the neutral polis of Melos. Shouldn't the morality of the Athenians (things like adhering to promises, honoring obligations, seeking glory, displaying patriotism, etc.) have played a role in how the Athenians then conducted the war? In other words, why did they seem to gravitate to an attitude of "the end (i.e. victory in the war) justifies the means" of waging it? Does Thucydides agree or disagree with this notion, according to what you've read?
