Case Study: Antoine-Felix Boisselier was a French painter who specialized in Italian historical landscapes. Even though his 1833 View of the Colosseum from the Orti Farnesiani is a romantic depiction of Roman ruins, it depicts some clues of life in a tectonically active area. The mountains in the background are a distant reflection of collision between Africa and Eurasian plates, while the Colosseum ruins also reflect this ongoing tectonic activity. Much of their damage occurred during an earthquake in 1349. Roman engineers built the northern half of the Colosseum on firmly packed, older river terraces while the southern half (toward the right side of the painting) overlay unconsolidated river sediment.
