When David Walker released his book An Appeal to the Colored Citizens of the World, the slave South lost its mind. Southern states banned the book, put out a bounty for the capture of Walker dead or alive, and even passed laws making it illegal to teach blacks to read and write. After reading the book, what about it was so revolutionary? Why did the South feel so threatened by Walker's message?
