Case Study: A 52 year old female cancer patient developed sepsis. A blood culture was ordered and the anaerobic bottle was positive at 48 hours. The aerobic bottle was negative. The anaeriobic bottle was subcultured. A Gram stain showed small Gram negative poorly staining pleomorphic cocco-bacilli. The CDC agar grew medium size white non hemolytic colonies after 72 hours. There was robust growth on KVLB & grey colonies with black precipitates surrounding the colonies on BBE. No growth

Questions:

  1. Is this organism an anaerobe, aerobe, or facultative anaerobe?
  2. What is the presumptive identification? - name the bacteria, it can only be one
  3. Why did the organism grow well on KLVB agar?
