On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared COVID-19 a global pandemic. A laboratory test needed to confirm the diagnosis of COVID-19 is done by a nasopharyngeal swab. On October 29, 2020, Alberta's minister of health signed Ministerial Order 645/2020 authorizing certain regulated health professionals to perform nasopharyngeal swabbing for the purposes of testing for COVID-19.
