Discussion :

The debate over the institution of slavery intensified throughout the first half of the nineteenth century - and culminated in the American Civil War of 1861-1865 (although it is important to understand that the Civil War was not fought over only the issue of slavery but state's rights as they pertain to the issue of slavery and economic policy as well).

After considering some of the "pro-slavery" arguments and the "anti-slavery" arguments of this era as presented HERE (as well as those presented in your textbook on pages 338-339), respond to AT LEAST two of the following question(s):

• In your opinion, what factors most contributed to the "pro" and "anti"-slavery arguments and why?

• What factors do you believe most influenced one's respective position on slavery in the United States in the 19th century and why?

• Why did the Fugitive Slave Act provoke such strong opposition in the North?

• The "compromise" between slave and free states collapsed with secession. Why did compromise fail at this moment and why did some southern states determine that the election of Abraham Lincoln in 1860 necessitated secession?
