Case Study: we have to examine the life and legacy of the Venetian merchant and traveler, Marco Polo, as he made his way across Eurasia during the period of Mongol rule. For this assignment, you are to reflect on our class lectures, discussions and slides. I have also posted two resources for this assignment. The first is a web source which examines the life and travels of Marco Polo, and explains some of the challenges the Venetian had in crossing Eurasia.
The second source is a documentary film (In the Footsteps of Marco Polo) which examines the journey of two American travelers who attempt to retrace the route of the Venetian traveler Marco Polo (1254-1324) through the Silk Road. As we have discussed in class, Marco Polo made the journey through the Silk Road during the time of the Mongol Empire, and was made possible by the peace and security that the Mongols provided. I think this documentary highlights the challenges Marco Polo would have faced as he made this long and incredible journey in the 13th century, even with the security provided by the Mongols khans.
Task for this film is to consider the following questions. Use the linked article, the film and our class lectures, discussions and readings for your answer. Answer should be approximately ONE PAGE, single spaced. References are not necessary, and you don't have to use any outside sources.
Questions:
1.Why did so many travelers, including Marco Polo, make the journey across this difficult terrain in the 13th century, and not earlier? What role did the Pax Mongolica play in this? What did the Mongols do to encourage trade and travel across their empire? (Provide several examples).
2.Why, in your opinion, did luxury goods such as silks, spices, glassware, rugs, and precious stones dominate trade along the Silk Road? What made these ideal commodities for Silk Road trade?
3. What challenges did Marco Polo experience in his crossing of Eurasia? (Use points from the web source and the documentary film here). What new challenges would have emerged after the Mongol Empire collapsed?
