There are two components to this research assignment.
1. You will remember that our court system has both a federal and state level, each having its own jurisdiction. Your assignment is to find a federal case and a case from your home state that interests you. In one paragraph for each case, provide the citation for the case; briefly explain the facts and what the court decided. One useful source you may wish to use is Find law (https://lp.findlaw.com/)
2. Unlike all the other states, the legal system in Louisiana derives from the Civil Code established by French emperor Napoleon in 1804. The other 49 states have systems based on the English common law system. Your assignment is to write a 1-2 page paper that answers the following questions.
• Why did Louisiana adopt France's law structure?
• How does Louisiana's system of "civil law" differ from the "common law" traditions practices by all the other states?
• What impact does this have on businesses in Louisiana?
You will be assessed on the rationale you use in addressing the questions/issue posted, and how well you justify your argument regarding the issues. Your response must be thought provoking, have well developed ideas and/or opinions, and should reference any supporting material from the text, lecture or other sources you have used to complete the assignment.
