Lincoln was hesitant to issue the Emancipation Proclamation let alone touch the issue of slavery in the beginning due to the fear of border slave states to join the Confederacy. Thought as time progressed he cautiously approached the subject of abolition.

Though as he gained support he became more confident until he issued the ultimatum to the Confederates. When they refused to respond, he issued the Emancipation Proclamation.

While the Southern States held onto the belief that they would receive support from European powers a series of events quickly defeated that hope. While France looked at the Civil war as an opportunity to establish a new French empire in the United States, their attempt to come up from the south was ended when they were defeated in Mexico City.

Hopes then turned to Great Britain to assist the Confederacy, they even bought two blockade runner ships from them, however, with the Emancipation Proclamation and Great Britain outlawing slavery in 1833, this ended hopes for European support for the Confederacy.

This course more than met my expectations. I greatly appreciated the detailed information and the quality feedback from the other students as well as the Professor.

I've always been a military buff and I've enjoyed reading about the strategies and tactics used during the conflicts.

The only thing I could suggest to make this course better is visual learning tools. I've always been a visual learner, and while I was able to adapt and use the provided material to learn, I would've had an easier time if there had been more visual/interactive material.
