BUSI48900 Principles of Management - Workshop -Ethics & Information
What are the ethical considerations for managers in dealing with information?
Why are they central to a managers role?
Discussion
Any questions to the team?
What was specifically good about the seminar? Areas for improvement?
How well did the team explain the role of ethics in management
Activity 1: Cultural relativism (10 mins)
We looked at this example in the lecture. In pairs:
1. identify which manager each member is most likely to agree with
2. Discuss the reasons for any differences in opinion between you
Activity 2: Information & Privacy
(15 mins)
In pairs write down:
1. How many organisations hold data on you
• Make a list of organisation and type of data
2. Imagine that you have access to all this data and wish to build a profile of the characteristics of the person
• What would this profile contain?
3. If a government department or single commercial organisation were given aces to all this information, what could they use it for?
• How might it affect their family and friends?
Activity 3: Non-consent
If you were a Facebook user in January of 2012, you might remember logging on, scrolling through your newsfeed and feeling especially upbeat or maybe a little more down than usual. If so, you are not alone.
Facebook's data scientists manipulated the newsfeed. More than 600,000 unwitting users were shown either mostly upbeat or more depressing news stories in an effort to determine if this affected their moods.
Activity 4: Use Rights vs Social Media
Many terms of service are confusing and misleading for users. It is often not transparent what these agreements mean and people haven't really understood what they have entered into. Often companies make a ‘land grab' for users' rights and content.
The most concerning example of such a 'land grab' can be seen on professional networking site
LinkedIn. LinkedIn makes broad claims over users' content, giving it the ability to:
• "copy, prepare derivative works of, improve,
• distribute, publish, remove, retain, add,
• process, analyze,
• use and commercialise,
• in any way now known or in the future discovered..."
Activity 5: Considering Wirkkala
In Pairs (5mins)
1. Identify two separate ethical issues that have arisen are could arise in the Wirkkala case study
2. Write them down and be prepared to explain why you think that they are important, indicating:
• What the ethical issues are
• Why they are most important
• What the role of IS is in the development and implications of these ethical issues
3 - write down three key words relevant to the session
2 - select two of the key words and develop full sentences around them, focused on what was discussed in class
1 - select one of your sentences and expand the idea to a full paragraph, outlining contrasting perspectives and including critical reflection about class discussion.
