1) E. coli cells have been starved of food overnight. You will find that they are consuming oxygen at a low rate before you add glucose to the culture. Why are the cells consuming oxygen when they don't have any food to consume?

2) After injecting glucose into the E. coli culture, there is a delay before the rate of oxygen consumption increases. What is causing this delay?
