Use this sheet to begin highlighting key points in the article. Your answers could be developed into a multi-paragraph summary that will form the basis of your initial post for this week's discussion assignment.
Answer the questions below using one of the readings for the Unit 1: Summary & Analysis essay (see Unit 1 prompt). Do NOT use one of the textbook chapters that are assigned for this week.
Reading title and authors' name:
Writer (who says it?): Who is writing the piece, and what are his/her credentials or qualifications?
Purpose (why do they say it?): Why are the authors compelled to write or speak out?
Context (When are they saying it?): When was the piece written? Is there any background or context needed to understand the author's ideas?
Thesis (what they are arguing): What is the author's main argument? Identify the main point first by quoting it and then paraphrase it to show your understanding of the idea.
Audience (who do they say it to?): Who do the writers address? Are the writers addressing members of a specific field or discipline?
Genre (how do they say?): What is the genre (the word "genre" refers to a type of text- a report, an essay, a story, etc.)? How would you classify this text?
Methods (how do they say it?): How do the writers attempt to develop and support the argument (statistics, personal examples, narrative, repetition of ideas, questions)? In other words, what are some of the ways that the authors developed the argument?
Summary Introduction: Briefly introduce the reading in 1-2 sentences to begin your summary.
