Why are primates social? How was Jane Goodall able to closely observe chimpanzee behaviors? The chimpanzees were already accustomed to human presence. She only observed chimpanzees at night, using the cover of darkness to keep her presence unknown. She was able to successfully camouflage herself so that the chimpanzees did not know she was present. She habituated a group to her presence.
