Start of my response:
In recent years, there has been a growing trend of online spaces devolving into toxic environments. There are several reasons for this, but the two main ones seem to be echo chambers and confirmation bias. An echo chamber is a space where people only share and hear information they agree with. This can be dangerous because it creates a bubble where people are not exposed to other points of view. This can lead to people becoming more extreme in their views and also less tolerant of other people who do not share their views. Confirmation bias is another issue that can lead to toxicity in online spaces.
This is when people only seek out information that confirms their existing beliefs, and ignore or dismiss information that contradicts their beliefs. This can make it difficult for people to have constructive conversations or debates, as they only look for information that supports their views. These issues are made worse because social media platforms are designed to keep people engaged for as long as possible, which is done algorithmically through showing users controversial or divisive content twisted in their favor, causing them to stay on the app for as long as possible.
It is possible to maintain these spaces, but it would require a major change in how social media platforms are designed and operated. For example, social media platforms could show people a wider range of content, including content from various perspectives. This would make it easier for people to see various different opinions. People would be able to make a logical conclusion rather than a quick judgment with no context. The toxicity is caused by echo chambers and confirmation bias but through better policing, on social media, the toxicity could be fixed.
