People depend on ecosystems for food, clean water, flood protection, and much more. We generally think of ecosystems as separate from their services and the value we place on them. It's nice to have a forest near our home and to enjoy the wildlife. However, the forest is important also for flood protection, water purification, wild food, pollution regulation, carbon sequestration, wind regulation, etc.
Ecosystem services are the benefits people obtain from ecosystems, including those benefits that people perceive and those they do not perceive. These services are classified into three groups: Provisions, regulators and cultural services.
