Who Are You? or Who Am I?
Directions:
Student should interview a member of the African American community, it can be a member of his/her family, a close family friend, an associate, or acquaintance; and write a brief 3-4-page interview paper or conduct a face-to- face uploaded interview. In the process of writing this short paper or conducting a face-to-face interview, the following questions should be answered. The paper is a descriptive essay and should be typed and doubled-spaced; the face-to-face interview must be accompanied by a one-page introduction of the person's bio, and why you chose to interview this person. The questions don't have to be in the order listed, but all questions should be asked Also, if your interviewee would like to be interviewed on camera-contact me so that a consent form can be completed.
Task
1) How important is it to know your family's history?
2) What is your full name? Were you named after someone, who?
3) Do you have a nickname? How did you get the nickname?
4) When were you born? (Individual may not want to give their birth year that's acceptable)
5) Where were you born?
6) Do you prefer the term Black or African American and why?
7) Have you ever experienced racism, and how did you deal with the situation?
8) Do you have any siblings? If so, what is your birth position (oldest, youngest, or middle); optional give the full names of your siblings -and nicknames if they had any?
9) How many generations can you identify on your mother's side (maternal) and father's (paternal).
10) Who was the oldest relative you remembered as a child? Name the relationship...
a. How important is it to connect with older relatives? Can you identify one lesson taught to you by this relative -or any relative.
11) Discuss some aspects of your education (did you like school, what was your favorite subject, etc.; discuss any jobs you have had? Do you believe education is important?
12) Does your family have any special customs or rituals, which passed down from one generation to another? Discuss them and why they are important...
13) Does your family have any special heirlooms (furniture, jewelry, clothing, books, etc.), what are the objects, and why they are important?
14) What is your favorite food (based on your ethnic background); do you eat it often, can you make the dish?
15) What was your proudest or most important achievement in life, and why?
16) How would you like to be remembered?
17) Anything else you would like to discuss about yourself, your family. the Black community or any general statements.
