Question - Family Rituals Discussion
Description - Rituals play a very important part in shaping our identity and building a culture. Rituals, whether positive or negative, have long-lasting impacts on individuals. View the short clip below. While this scenario is comical, it certainly demonstrates how rituals can positively or negatively impact individuals when the same meaning is not shared.
For this assignment, post a response to the prompt below. Students can earn up to 20 points. This is a sharing activity, so no responses are necessary. Respect that rituals, whether they are funny, harmful, or uplifting, they are all very personal. I encourage the entire class to read through posts.
Own (or another's) family rituals: Identify and reflect upon a ritual within a family/relationship. Provide background information and details to tell the story to the class.
How did the ritual become a ritual? Was it passed down or newly created?
Who made the decision to ritualize the behavior? Or did it just happen by accident?
Consider the importance of the ritual in the relationship. Do you see the ritual continuing?
Should it be discontinued, and who or what would be impacted?
What did you learn from the text and materials that could be applied to your ritual?
