Assignment:
The Socratic theme best revealed in the Truman Show is revealed in the parallels between Plato's Famous "Allegory of the Cave" and the false world which Truman must inhabit. It is difficult to identify the genre of this film yet it is certainly "hyper-realistic".
The Truman Show (Peter Weir, 1998) and carefully note how the hero (Truman) like the prisoner who is freed in the allegory of the cave must come to discover the truth about his life in Seahaven, and what he must do to become free. What philosophy lessons can we discover by carefully analyzing this film?
For example: To draw parallels between The Truman Show and the Allegory of the Cave, one might ask the following questions:
*what does the cave represent? Seahaven and the Truman Show and all of the characters in the show
*who guards the cave and manipulates the shadows on the wall? Christof
*who represents the released prisoner from the cave? Truman
*who liberates Truman from slavery and ignorance? He is inspired by Sylvia and he undertakes his own "Hero journey"
*what corresponds to ignorance in the cave? Truman before he realizes that Seahaven is fake?
*How does he come to the realization that his life in Seahaven is fake? in a step by step process which unfolds in the film action.
And there are many more parallels that can be drawn!
In the documentary, "How will it end?" Ed Harris (Christof) and Laura Linney (Meryl) mentioned that The Truman Show is prophetic. When they made the film, reality TV total surveillance and AI had only begun. What does this give us to think about? Can you see any prophetic parallels to the current world in this film?
