You have been fortunate to secure a professional practicum experience (PPE) with Janice Smith; an accomplished HIM professional who is the Vice President Revenue Cycle Management. During the PPE, you will spend the majority of your observation time with Janice.

On meeting with Janice on day one, she asks you to spend 5 minutes and jot down in rapid succession as many words as you can think of that are associated with the word "credible." After generating the list, she talks to you about how important it is to be credible, to give others a reason to listen to what you have to say. Janice suggests keeping those words in a notebook and refer to them often as a guide as you build your leadership skills.

Scenario 2

Janice invites you to attend a Revenue Cycle Management Team meeting to review statistical reports and monthly team performance metrics. The meeting begins with a review of the ground rules, which include:

  • Be prepared

  • Allow everyone a chance to participate
  • Contribute
  • Listen with an open mind

  • Confront the problem, not the person

During the meeting, one of the department managers takes exception and raises her voice when another team member questions if her monthly metrics were available for the month.

Scenario 3

The Health Information Department is experiencing low staffing in the outpatient coding workgroup due to Covid-19 resulting in increased days in Accounts Receivable (A/R). Janice arranges for the coding leadership to present their ideas on solving the staffing shortage.

Suggestions include:

  • Increasing part-time and on-call hours
  • Requesting assistance from inpatient coders
  • Transferring work to coders at their sister facility
  • Outsourcing; vendor under contract
