Step One - Locate a substance abuse prevention lesson, workshop, or presentation. Many students find this from an online search
Step Two - Analyze the lesson, by responding to each of the following questions:
Who is the lesson reaching?Who is the lesson and messaging missing?How might shame be hidden in the lesson?From a student's lens-what might their perspective be about the lesson? How might you incorporate their realities about substance use/nonuse into this lesson, resources, and assessment?Are healthy norms a component of the lesson? How might healthy norms be reinforced more?What health skill(s), if any are present in the lesson? Do you feel the health skill(s) taught in the lessons are sufficient in time and duration to reach proficiency? Are the skills well-aligned with increasing the development of protective factors and reducing the risk factors in the research?
Step Three - Revise the lesson to be better aligned with the effective practices in substance abuse prevention education. Submit the current lesson/session plan with your comments on how you plan to better integrate/revise/enhance the lesson. Include any necessary additions to content and resources, as well as the removal of current content and resources in the revised plan. You may insert comments or add your revisions in another text color within the body of the lesson plan.
