There are three parts to this assignment. After watching the documentary you will complete your responses to Part A. Then, after doing additional on-line and/or library research, respond to the questions in Part B. Make sure you understand how to avoid plagiarism and be sure to use in-text citations where appropriate and include a list of your references at the end. If you need any help, please make an appointment with the Noel Studio. After finishing Part B, answer the question asked in Part C.
Part A) Answer the following questions after watching the documentary.
1) What was the key problem addressed in the documentary?
2) State the purpose of the video. In other words, what is the video trying to achieve or to make happen.
3) Several different views are presented in this documentary. Compare and contrast the points of view or major concepts that are addressed. e.g. you might include: What assumptions did the board make about who would make the best president? What assumptions did students/protesters make about the best choice for president? Were the assumptions fair and accurate?
4) Describe your thoughts on what happened and compare this with other types of protest that have happened. This should be at least a few paragraphs long.
Part B) After watching the documentary and answering the above question, go on-line to find information about a second protest that later occurred at Gallaudet in 2006, this protest is often referred to as "Unity for Gallaudet". As the 2nd protest was happening, many people though the media coverage was biased - make sure you look at SEVERAL SOURCES to try and get the bigger picture of what happened. (You can google phrases such as ‘second Gallaudet protest', 'unity for Gallaudet', ect. , sites with info include NPR).
5) What was the reason for the second protest at Gallaudet?
6) The media portrayed many different reasons for this protest. Describe the many different - often conflicting - reasons that were given for the second protest - also describe who held the different views. (Be sure to use in-text citation to show where your information came from and include the source in a reference list at the end of the paper)
7) What are your thoughts on the 2nd protest? Are your thoughts the same or different toward this protest compared with the 1st protest? Be sure to give details and thoroughly explain your reasoning - your response should be substantial.
Part C
8) Do a bit more googling. Who is the current president of Gallaudet? When did she become president and what is her background? Do the students and faculty support this president? From what you read, what are your thoughts about the new president?
