Question

The nurse is caring for a patient who is scheduled to have an invasive procedure completed. The patient is alert and oriented and is having serious second thoughts about whether or not they want to go ahead with this procedure. The patient confides these thoughts to the nurse and says that they understand that they have already consented to the procedure, so they guess it's too late now. The nurse reassures the patient that it is not too late to change their mind. She suggests to the patient that will notify the provider and ask them to come back to speak with the patient before proceeding any further. This will give the patient an opportunity to have all of their remaining questions answered so that they can make a truly informed decision. The actions described in this scenario provide a good example of the nurse practicing what essential nursing function?
