At the national level the court system has 3 layers.

Lower courts conduct trials.
Appellate courts hear appeals.
The Court renders a final verdict.

Most cases start in a state level court and work their way through the system. Very, very few ever reach the Supreme Court and the Court decides which cases it will hear.

There are appellate courts (or circuit courts). There are specialized courts. The U.S. military runs its own separate court system. Again the federal court system is complicated (and that is even without adding the state court systems into the mix!)

For any case that Is heard by SCOTUS, what is the goal? (Especially since the facts of the case have already been determined in a lower court.)
