Question: How do you personally experience and express the 4 major emotions described in your textbook: anger, happiness, fear, and sadness? Describe both verbal and nonverbal behaviors you use when you feel and express any of those 4. Do the same for a 5th emotion (see below) of your choice.
What do you do for each of them? Give an example of each for illustration, and include what you believe other people would observe seeing if they were watching you. What does your face look like? Your eyes and eyebrows? Your mouth? What does your voice sound like? Pitch and pace and volume and tone? What about your breathing? Shallow, fast, slow, deep? Are you animated or withdrawn?
How comfortable are we with our own ability to express anger, fear or sadness? What makes us want to hide or disguise these emotions at times? How do we sometimes act them out in inappropriate or self-destructive ways? How might our fear of these emotions in others relate to our comfort level in working with clients who are experiencing them? What skills might we need in order to feel safe with clients who are struggling with difficult emotions and how to express them?
What might be most helpful to you when experiencing difficult emotions? (Consider ideas such as supportive listening, allowing time for our emotions, space to tell our story, acceptance of the feelings, validation, etc. What would that look like?)
