Instructions: Read Chapter 4 of Ultimate Questions and watch the short video clips below. The problem of free will explores the extent to which humans can exercise agency--the ability to act consciously and freely. Many generally like to think that they are free and have agency in their lives. This perception of free will is reflective of the high amounts of personal responsibility that one perceives individuals to have. There is a paradox that has been explored in every culture throughout history and still has not been resolved: The more free will we have, the more responsible we are for our actions; the less free will we have, the less responsible we are for our actions. If we move to the extreme end of free will, we assume our lives are not determined. If we move to the other extreme of determinism, we become fatalistic and assume we have no control over our lives. The extent to which these two theories overlap or do not overlap is something that you need to figure for yourselves.
Answer the following with at least a two paragraph response:
(1) Explain in detail which of the general theories in the chapter characterize your viewpoints on Free Will and/or Determinism: libertarianism, indeterminism, determinism, compatibilism, a deep compatibilism.
(2) Which theory or theories provide sound counter-arguments and challenge your position?
After you post your assignment, you will comment on two of your peers' responses--at least one short paragraph. If you do not comment on your peers' work, points will be taken off the grade for this assignment. If you see that someone already has two peer comments, comment on someone else's work, this will ensure that everyone has at least two comments. Keep in mind that merely completing this assignment, as well as all other discussion assignments, doesn't mean that you will automatically get all the points. I will be reading and grading these for philosophical depth as opposed to mere belief and conjecture. Make sure that you also double-check your grammar and syntax.
