A big part of what makes a Gestalt approach to dreamwork unique from a psychoanalytic approach is that Perls' theory of dreams gives no emphasis to universal symbols. Symbolism is considered unique in that it comes from the individual and only he or she can truly interpret it. In Gestalt therapy, dreams are seen as being projections of parts of oneself. These are typically parts that have been ignored, rejected, or suppressed. The aim of gestalt dream analysis is to accept and reintegrate these different parts. Dreams need to be fully accepted, and not broken down and analyzed. Do you have any ideas of how you might use either of these conceptualizations of dreamwork in your counselling practice? Which theory do you tend to align with the most?
