Five days after having a laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, a 38-year-old transgender patient (identifies as "she/her") reports to an emergency room for complaints of focal pain to a surgical site in the upper right quadrant of the abdomen. The surgical site itself demonstrated no redness, dehiscence, nor discharge. The area is raised and feels like a "grape" deep under the skin and is very painful to touch. A CT of the abdomen reveals an abscess in the rectus abdominal muscle. The abdominal cavity appears normal. The patient is treated with IV antibiotics for 3 days inpatient, then sent home to complete a course of oral antibiotics.
