Problem: A hospital's epidemiologist decided to research risk factors for liver cancer among the hospital's patients. The hospital's epidemiologist reviewed the hospital's electronic medical records of all patients who were 45 years of age or older and receiving care at the hospital as of January 1st, 2000 and for whom data on smoking history as of 1/1/2000 were available. A total of 17,000 patients were identified. Of those, 600 were found to have a history of liver cancer as of 1/1/2000. On April 1st, 2021, the epidemiologist conducted an electronic search of the medical records of the remaining 16,400 and determined who had received a diagnosis of liver cancer or died from liver cancer after 1/1/2000. The resulting data are as follows.
