Problem: As a researcher I am interested to know whether participating in sports positively influences self-esteem in young girls. I go ahead and identify a group of girls who never played any sports before but now are planning to get into organized sports. I gave them a 50 item self-esteem inventory test before they begin playing organized sports and administered the same test after 6 months of playing sports. The test is measured on an interval scale where higher numbers indicate high esteem. In addition scores on the inventory are normally distributed. See score below
