Assignment:

Prompt- Realists, Liberals, and Constructivists view International Law and Organizations very differently. Which view best reflects the realities of contemporary international politics and why?

Response to prompt- I would say realism as liberalism has a level of optimism and trust in the system of international law that many can view it as simply unrealistic. Liberals tend to believe that peace among nations is not only achievable, but desirable and some can say even inevitable. How based on the history of how international organizations have operated, it is easy to counter this point of view by simply analyzing the many failures of these organizations.

For example the League of Nations failure to stop imperial conquests and de-escalate the start of a second world war. This is where Realist come in as Realism gained popularity after the Second World War as many questioned how such a catastrophic event occurred after a period of supposed peace and optimism. Realist simply lack the optimistic view that liberals tend to have and simply views international relations and geo political problems with a viewpoint of the reality of such situations. Realists often base their belief's on the history of interactions among states and multi state organizations. After all most of human history post civilization has been war and conquest.

This contradicts liberal viewpoint that peace is part of human nature. This is why I believe realism I best reflects the realties of international politics as optimism often can not be applied to those situations and doing so can take away from the reality of it. How should I respond to this response?
