Discussion Post

For this discussion, write an initial post that answers the following question about Unchained Memories:Readings from the Slave Narratives

Which reading/performance from the documentary most moved you, and why? Be as specific as possible, considering not only the content of the narrative, but also the portrayal of that narrative by a contemporary actor. You can also mention more than one reading/performance if you are highlighting a theme about what chattel slavery was like.

At the beginning of your post, be sure to cite the slave/freedom narrative under discussion (e.g., James Green, Vol. 16, Texas). You should also parenthetically cite the timestamp in the documentary where this moment appears, in minutes: seconds, like this (00:24). If you know the name of the actor (e.g., Samuel L. Jackson), you can mention that, too.

As you write, try using the term "enslaved person" rather than "slave," and "enslaver" rather than "master." For more info on the history and connotations of these terms.
