Anaerobic respiration is synonymous with fermentation. In microbiology, at least, these are two completely different processes. One function that is shared by anaerobic respiration and fermentation is that both result in the oxidation of NADH to NAD+. Which process requires an electron transport chain? Which one doesn't?
