Assignment:

1. Take a few minutes to look over the meme. Which person in the photo is flexing their agency? How does the picture reiterate the points about agency and social change as explained?

Flexing one's agency usually involves some kind of challenge to the dominant culture: its values, beliefs, and norms. It also often threatens the power and privilege of dominant groups.

When one flexes their agency, others may agree with their stand and support their cause. When enough people rally behind a desired change in the structure, a social movement can occur.

Acts of agency alone cannot change a society, but they have the potential to foster social movements that can. Social structures are by definition collectively upheld, and thus they can only collectively change.

2. Why does Naomi Klein claim that it is more challenging for social movements to take "leaps" today than in the past? Based on what you've learned throughout the course this semester, do you agree with her analysis of contemporary social movements? Explain why or why not.
