Sibley's argument in this section is that individuals and cultures want to dominate other groups. This is based on a Manichean worldview, in which an individual or group will divide the world into two parts, the good and the bad (top of page 186). The person will usually identify himself or herself with the good and project the bad onto another group. The group is generally arbitrary, and historically, in Europe, these groups were Jews, Gypsies, criminals, and darker-skinned people. Sibley is most explicit in the section beginning on p. 189, where he discusses how Europeans associated whiteness with positive qualities and blackness with negative ones. This was used as a justification for conquest and colonization. So, ultimately, othering is about having cultural power and privilege over other groups so that you can dominate them.
