Case Study: A server named Mary recounts the following situation she was involved in:One night during this past summer, my friends came to visit me at my job at a bar andgrill, and I felt kind of bad because I knew the long distance that they drove. At the restaurant,we cannot provide discounts to people without the manager's consent. Towards the end of themeal, I was trying to find a way to get them a discount so they would not have to pay for thefood. The way I worked around this was that first I lied to the manager and told them that theysent the sampler back because the quesadillas had bacon in it and that they could not eat bacon. Ialso told him that the food had just come out and that they did not want a new sampler now. Somy manager ended up making the food complementary so that they would not have to pay for it.About five minutes later, I went to the other manger, who trusts me with everything, and I toldher I needed her manager card to put gratuity on a check and that I would be right back with hercard. I then went to the computer and voided off the main entrees from the computer so that itwould say that the meals were essentially never made. I then returned the card to the managerand my mission was accomplished. As a waiter, I did not ring in the beverages for my friends sothey did not have to pay for that either. At the end of the meal, I gave them the bill and it read$0.00, and they started laughing because they could not believe I would do such a thing.I know that at work all the managers love me, and I definitely do get special treatment, whether it is preferred treatment when it comes to scheduling or anything at all. I know exactlywhat I have to tell the managers to get what I want. To be honest, I do feel bad that I do suchthings, but I would not be surprised at all if I found myself doing it again.
