The Public health topic that I plan to address is Early Childhood Caries which is the most prevalent chronic disease in children. Early Childhood Caries (ECC) is the presence of 1 or more decayed, missing or filled tooth surfaces in a primary tooth in a child under 6 years of age. ECC is associated with problems such as chronic toothaches, difficulty in chewing, malnutrition, difficulty in sleeping and missed days of school. Good oral health in children plays an important role in eating, speech, and a positive self-image. My assessment questions are: How do children get cavities? Should baby teeth be brushed as frequently as adult teeth? How do you prevent cavities? Do you drink your tap water? Why or why not? Do you use fluoride toothpaste? Why or why not? At what age should children have their first dental visit? What suggestions of other factors that may be related that should be considered. Using in text citations and current resources.
