The bill that I have chosen that directly affects the community that I am in is Senate Bill 214 which is the Low-Income Housing bill. The legislative body that drafted this bill was the Indiana General Assembly. This bill aims in the optimization of affordable housing by providing exemptions on property taxes in order to enhance buildings that were built or revamped in order to provide housing for families of low income (Indiana General Assembly, 2021).

Ultimately my opinion of the potential impact of this bill is that this will allow developers and homeowners to create more housing that is affordable to low-income families. This bill was originally proposed back in 2016 in the form of Act 309 which was for the elderly and disabled but the bill was repealed (Indiana General Assembly, 2021).

I agree with this bill, it is a great initiative to provide stable housing for people in the community. The community that I chose is a low-income community which has aged homes that are unkept, damaged and abandoned. Due to these circumstances, some of the homes had to be condemned and deemed unlivable. A bill such as SB214 will allow these low-income families to be exempt from paying property taxes and allow them to afford to live in a stable home environment.
