Assignment:
Read the following description of a sociologist's focus of study and decide which paradigm the researcher is most likely taking.
Professor Klein has heard of the Alameda Point Collaborative (APC), which is a supportive housing community for homeless families. The 500 residents, over half of whom are children, are provided with housing, services, and community programs. What impresses Professor Klein is that the residents of the APC seem to be flourishing. Professor Klein wants to understand why, so he and two graduate students start interviewing some of the residents. As they conduct interviews, they analyze the transcripts in search of common themes. They generate theories about why the program is so successful. Then, they interview additional residents to see if the themes are similar.
Professor Klein has designed this study from the perspective of (naturalism / participatory action research / grounded theory / ethnomethodology) because the focus is on (studying a phenomenon as it occurs in context / generating theories from observations as they unfold / the impact of breaking social norms / an intention to achieve racial justice).
Grounded theory originated from the collaboration of sociologists who brought together two main traditions of research: positivism and interactionism. Grounded theories are supposed to follow certain guidelines. Which of the following suggestions fit into those guidelines? Check all that apply.
Make sure you are grounded in the theory you are trying to test.
Let the subjects be in charge of the research.
Think comparatively.
Follow the research procedures.
