Systems Thinking in Public Health
Assessment - Case Study Analysis
Instructions
For this assessment you have been provided with a system diagram that relates to antimicrobial resistance of microorganisms relating to the use of antimicrobial drugs in the agriculture, veterinary and human health sectors. The diagram provided does not include every factor relevant to this issue. You do NOT need to refer to other sources. Your answers must be based ONLY on what you have been given.
Study the diagram and make sure you understand the relationships outlined.
Answer the questions briefly but in as much detail as possible based on your understanding of the diagram.
Question 1. In this system, there are more factors that are increasing microbial resistance than decreasing it. Why is this? Explain with reference to the aims and imperatives of public health that you know about.
Question 2. Is there an alternative to responding to antimicrobial-resistant infections by increasing hygiene procedures? Explain in detail.
Question 3. Which is likely to be a more effective leverage point: the discovery of new antimicrobials or policies to reduce industrial use of antimicrobials? Explain in detail.
Question 4. When implementing the leverage point at stronger policy and training on antimicrobial use, should the primary target be the public or medical professionals? Why is this?
Question 5. Industrial use of antimicrobials has historically had the objective of increasing productivity, such as in agriculture. If you were lobbying industrial stakeholders to adopt stricter policies and decreased use of antimicrobials, what arguments would you use and why?
