A case study is a type of research that is done which is an in-depth analysis on a specific event, situation, individual or group over a period of time. It involves detailed examinations of the subject(s) to understand what happened, why it happened and what we can learn from it. Think of it as a way to deep dive into a specific example to understand it better and apply those lessons to other similar situations. The Army uses case studies in several ways; one that we are all familiar with is an After Action Review (AAR). For example, the first step is to revisit the mission's goals and objectives, this is the point of the AAR where we ask "what was supposed to happen?" followed with "what happened?", the team will then gather all the events that occured.
