Provide evidence of the ways in which inequalities of gender, sexuality, race/ethnicity, age and class operate in the Caribbean.
• Critically examine the ideas, actions and relations which are based on and promote social inequalities in the following aspects of Caribbean life: nationalism and citizenship, politics, labour relations, globalization, education and leisure.
• Illustrate the ways in which inequalities are institutionalized in the Caribbean in areas such as education, work organizations, the justice system and politics.
Evaluate written and oral discourses for their potential to transform unequal relations and thereby contributing to a socially just society.
• Display competence in articulating ideas to provide evidence of and challenge to discourses of inequalities in Caribbean life.
• Apply a critical approach (or analysis) to everyday assumptions and practices which reflects open-mindedness to accepted social norms based on gender, race, class, age and sexual orientation
• Make feasible suggestions as to how inequalities can be challenged to encourage a more socially just Caribbean.
• Appreciate that inequalities and relationships of domination are not an inevitable feature of human relations thereby encouraging change towards equality.
• Reflect on their individual practices and ideas which serve to reproduce discriminatory behavior with a view to reducing and ultimately ending these.
Assignment Details:
You are required to develop an essay that responds to the question, "How do class, race, gender and other identities function together to shape the outcomes for men and women in two of the following areas in a named Caribbean territory:
• Education
• Community Leadership
• Popular Culture?"
The essay should:
Identify a Caribbean territory to be used as the reference point for your response
Offer an explanation as to how and why some identities take pre-eminence over others
Offer no less than three feasible and specific recommendations to respond to issues of otherness and/or oppression in the selected country. (There should be no less than three recommendations in total)
Use at least two relevant theories in your analysis and discussion of the issues raised.
