Film Analysis Paper (75p): There are numerous documentaries that highlight critical social issues related to sport and society that we are discussing in this course. In groups of 3-5 students, you are expected to write a written critique about one of the documentary films identified below. You need to receive instructor approval before you can begin the assignment. If you have another film in mind, then you must also receive permission to ensure that it meets the requirements for this assignment. Your film critique should be 5-7 full pages (Times New Roman 12p font, 1-inch margins, double-spaced) in length and include the following information:
Introduction (1 page): Provide a brief overview of the documentary film including the title, the context (when and where does the documentary take place?), and the sport(s) associated with the documentary film. Most of your introduction, however, should introduce the specific social issue(s) in focus, and provide a compelling argument for why this particular issue is of critical importance for sport managers.
Sociological Analysis (3-5 pages): This should be the longest section of your film analysis. Identify and discuss how the documentary film relates to this course. What specific sociological concepts are highlighted in the film? You should support your arguments with clear examples of the connection between specific course concepts and your chosen documentary. This section should also include a critique of the strengths and weaknesses of the film. What questions did you have that the film helped answer? What questions did you have that you wish the film had addressed?
Conclusion (1 page): You should discuss the two to three most important lessons you learned from your chosen documentary film, which has implications for future sport managers. How did the film enhance your understanding of sports in society? You should also discuss whether or not you would recommend this film to others. This should include a justification for your decision.
