Health Challenge: Malnutrition in women, infants, and adolescence in Philippians East Asia.
1. Ethnicity: Assess the ways in which ethnicity influence's identity for the population. How does ethnicity factor into cultural conceptions of identity? (Consider: the 10 common attributes of ethnicity: common culture, practices, religion, physical or racial, language, loyalty, community, social bonds, common values, separate institutions, minority, & immigration (Harner et al., 2020).
2. Stakes: Analyze the stakes of the health issue for the patients and their loved ones. (Consider factors such as social, economic - potential job loss/main income person, poor sanitation, health literacy, poverty, misconceptions or misinformation about the health challenge, increase risk of transmission, inequalities, food shortages).
3. Meaning of Illness: Describe how patients conceptualize illness in this population. (Consider: How does the target population describe, perceive, understand the specific health challenge (malnutrition)?
4. Social Stressors: Identify the social stresses patients may experience due to illness. Consider: biological/physical (body, genetics), environmental (climate, etc.) & psychological (coping style, type of personality, social support) stresses.
5 Impacts: Evaluate the potential impacts of the clinical setting on your relationship with the patient. (Consider: Will the patient travel to a neighborhood clinic? Would they consent to treatment for malnutrition? Would they trust you as one of their healthcare providers? Is the target population receptive to others from other countries? Would they be hostile? Will it be a mobile clinic?
