Which direction to apply the force components

When drawing a FBD, how do you know which direction the x, y and z components are applied? I know that the sum of forces in each direction and the moments about each axis have to equal zero so I know some FBD are pretty self explanatory. Is it guess and check or is there a specific way of telling which direction to apply the force components for a more complicated problem?
