5-S Assignment; Given the discussions related to the 5S numbers exercise last week, it is apparent that the members of our class have differing levels of experience with, and working in an organization that has, workplace organization and visual management in place and this is to be expected.

Obviously, a single exercise made as an assignment would be difficult to implement across any large organization where the participant does not have authority, but I believe that each of us can improve our individual approach to workplace organization and visual management within the process which we are responsible for.

Develop a proposal for a small scale 5-S implementation activity that you would like to plan and perform within your span of control. For example, if your individual tool cabinet needs 5-S, the assignment could be:

1. Take a photo of the current state of the cabinet (don’t clean it or clutter it up first) NOTE – It is highly recommended to always record the ‘current state’ as a baseline against which to measure improvement.

2. Also, by notifying management of your plans, you may well engage their interest in you and your educational goals which could lead to other things as well.

3. your project should include a Red Tag process (at least in DRAFT outline form) The assignment is then to perform this continuous improvement activity as planned.

4. A summary describing the project, including any tools or materials used.

5. Submit a copy of the visual factory standard which was developed.

6. Submit the ‘before’ image and an image (s) of the ‘after’ which demonstrates the application of the process.

7. Describes the process which will be used to Sustain the improvement to the associated.
