First Part:
Address the following:
If Frederick Douglass were to come back to life in the year 2018, which current social justice issue would he promote? In his promotion of that issue, what would he do/want people to do?
Use specific examples from his life to explain why you chose that issue and to defend why you believe that would be his course of action
Second part:
You need to replay on student response for each question;
1. What impact do you think Frederick Douglass made on the North and on the South in the era in which he lived? And on the United States today?
(Student's Answer)After Douglass escaped to New York, he began his work as a writer and speaker, shedding light on his experiences as a slave as well as the experiences of other slaves.
In doing so, he fought to abolish slavery and give freedom to African Americans. However, he did not stop there, he continued to fight for equality of African American men and women after the Civil War had ended.
The North and South had different views of African Americans still, but Douglass shared the experiences he had had in both regions to shed more light on the Civil Rights of African Americans. His work still impacts African Americans today, but it also impacts many other ethnicities and cultures. He shows us today that you have to fight for what you believe in and make that change happen over time.
2. What was Frederick Douglass's greatest strength? Explain and defend your answer.
(student's answer) Frederick Douglass' most important legacy was the use of his words to fight for the freedom and rights of African Americans.
He used his oratory and writing skills throughout his life to communicate his desire to free African American slaves which led to the Emancipation Proclamation brought by President Abraham Lincoln. He then advocated for equal rights and opportunities for his fellow Americans as a Civil Rights leader. He published "The North Star" and "Frederick Douglass' Paper to convey his message.
He used his oratory skills until the day he died when he came home to his wife after a Women's rights meeting and suddenly died of a massive heart attack. Douglass knew how special he was. Whenever he saw the opportunity, in his speeches and writings, he used his own symbolism against slavery and the dehumanization of human race
3. What makes Frederick Douglass worth studying in history?
(student's response)Fredrick Douglas changed history in the times during slavery. By some of the things he had accomplished it made slavery change in so many ways. He changed history and is why many people study him. The normal slave did not know how to read but he secretly taught himself how to read and write. He worked with abolitionist movements and that changed the future for many other slaves.
By him sharing his experience it helped people jump on his movement to help get other slaves free. He was very influential to many people. He showed how no matter what u come from, even if it is nothing you can still flourish and become something that you hope to become. His story shown in his narrative was remarkable and i learned so much that we should continue him for future generations.
