Assessment:
An exercise in paragraph-writing
Helpful tips:
• Firstly, the theme it contains is important. It is vital that we restrict ourselves to the theme of the question. It may seem that this is a limiting factor, but it teaches us to efficiently address a particular theme, without including information that could be irrelevant to the discussion. Multiple paragraphs are fine, as long as it stays on theme and includes relevant information.
• Second, is also important that our paragraph has an opening sentence, which could best be described as a "single sentence argument." e.g. - there are several ways in which the discovery of diamonds influenced the development of South African cities. With this sentence you have introduced your theme, foreshadowing the discussion to follow - i.e. the ways in which the development of the city was influenced.
• Third and perhaps most important, is the reference to be inserted. This means that we must acknowledge the source that we are using to answer the question. We have to insert a footnote after each sentence if we are not using a single source - which most of we will for this assignment. Instead, when making use of a single source, only insert a reference after every third sentence.
